Whether you decide to eat in or dine out, the local food and wine is good value.
Much of the harvest from local vineyards is turned into Cognac or Pineau (the local aperitif), but some local winemakers are now producing wines to rival those of Bordeaux Cotes de Blaye just to the south. This is not really surprising as the soil and orientation (the terroir) is very similar.
The Gardrat family have two parcels of vines close to Liboulas that go into their Sauvignon and Merlot wines - we regard these as our local wine. You can buy their wines in the local supermarket, or visit their winery which is just outside Cozes. Their rosé wine "Rosae" has won many awards and makes great summer drinking. The Gardats are also behind the Hauts de Talmont label that comes from their vineyard on the cliffs overlooking Talmont - it can be bought in the very smart shop in Talmont.
The markets in Cozes (Wednesdays) and Meschers (Sundays, but also every day in high season) are full of local produce, some of it organic. Charentais melons are available everywhere in season, and are delicious - the stall holders will help you choose one that is ripe and ready to eat.
Old varieties of tomatoes are making a comeback. Other local foods are saltmarsh lamb from
Meschers, and pork from Epargnes. Later in the summer, apples come into season, and the stalls sell many unusual local varieties, as well as the ubiquitous "Golden". Local honey is another treat.
