Apart from beaches, there are heaps of things to do and places to visit close by.
Meschers' troglodyte homes, built into the cliffs, were once home to Huguenots hiding from persecution and also to smugglers. You can visit either the Grottes de Matata (museum, hotel and creperie) or Grottes de Regulus (municipal museum).
Ten minutes further on along the coast road towards St Georges de Didonne is the Parc de L'Estuaire. Not just educational - the Parc presents the life of the Gironde estuary in a fun way for children, as well as having lots to offer adults.
A half-hour drive (maybe a bit slower at peak holiday time) is the Zoo at Palmyre, one of France's finest. So popular, it's best to go in the morning.
